Weird permissions behaviour!

Hi, Be gently with me this is my 1st post on this list :-[ 
I run Kubuntu hardy on a Lenovo T61 laptop! Up until yesterday things 
have been fine, I did my morning upgrade to see what breaks & to my 
surprise it actually did! My Issue is that I cant sudo from within the 
GUI ie synaptic or Adept etc also my desktop has mount points & not my 
real desktop icons :-(  I can navigate to /home/user/Desktop & see my 
default icons ok! but I cant delete or add on the mucked up desktop!

Does anyone have any ideas on how to fix this? I have posted on the 
hardy dev forum but no-one has replied so I guess it is a specific 
problem to me :'(
