trouble with pan

Additionally: without pan running, from a Terminal window, can you run:

nc news.server.address nntp

and get a response back like

200 news.server.address service ready

(then type quit and enter to go back to your shell prompt)

If that doesn't work, then you're not able to open an NNTP connection to
your news server and it's something outside of pan.
