That is all very nice, Simon, a glowing endorsement of someone that you
like. Well put.
The man is not on trial. We all make mistakes and some of us are lucky
enough to have mates who will speak for us.
Let us get this matter into perspective: - It was not just that he had
missed the pot (sic) but that he delivered his erroneous judgement with
ridicule.
Readers of computer magazine rely on these for guidance and his comments
were most likely enough to undo a lot of the hard work of fostering good
will for Ubuntu that many of us are engaged in - some overtly and others
covertly.
I had sent an email to him via his editor on the 10th April. A return
message advised that the editor was not available for a few days and any
matters considered important should be readressed to the 2nd editor. This
was done on the same day but there was no response. Perhaps he did not
receive the message. A second message sent on 12th May was acknowledged
with an offer to publish my letter. This was agreed to on 13th May.
If someone has finally got through to him that an amendment and apology
should be published then one could not ask for more although it is getting
to be rather late after the fact.
There is nothing to be gained by a crucifixion as history will testify.
As far as the Windows perspective is concerned, it does not wash. You would
not get away with this sort of nonsense in Windows either.
Cheers,
Andre
