Depending on what exactly your friend is looking to do (record audio,
sequence midi, etc.),
I would guess that ardour (http://ardour.org/) and/or rosegarden
(http://www.rosegardenmusic.com/) are the apps most likely to suit.
Both apps have a bit of a learning curve, but are well worth investing
some time in.

There is a multimedia focussed sub project of ubuntu called
UbuntuStudio (http://ubuntustudio.org/) which might be worth a look
at.
