If he wants something like ProTools, he should check out ardour 
http://www.ardour.org. Ubuntu has an older version of ardour, 0.99.3, 
but if you look up UbuntuStudio, and download the install disk, this 
comes with ardour 2, the most recent major release, with more features, 
etc.
