Dlink DWL-G510 wireless PCI card locks up system during startup

setup: Pentium 4, dapper gnome xubuntu
symptoms: installed the card, first boot up OK but could not get card
working using "system>Administration>networking".
    Powered down, pulled card booted to windows and loaded drivers from
supplied CD. Rebooted windows which recognised card.
Rebooted into Dapper which hangs at "setting up networking".
System completeley freezes. Must power off to get back.
Any ideas.
