the hpijs driver or hplip. The -cxi variant is listed on
linuxprinting.org as a "paperweight", but the comments below that
disagree with the assessment.

Windows drivers won't help - you need the Linux driver, probably one of
those I mentioned above. Those drivers are "built in" , so usually it is
just a question of selecting one and activating the printer. Not sure how
this is done in Xubuntu though, as I haven't set up a printer in Xubuntu.
Maybe someone who has will give you more information, or look at

https://help.ubuntu.com/
https://help.ubuntu.com/community/

For Xubuntu you might also look at

Please tell us what you did to configure Thunderbird - it should work fine
for either pop3 ( the usual) or IMAP (less commonly used but probably
alsosupplied by your ISP)

Quite a few, really - to find the linuxprinting URL above I just entered
Deskjet 970cxi linux

In Google - it was the first hit :) There is also
http://google.com/linux (complete with penguin ;-)

The idea is that we try to help, and in a month or two, or a year, you
pass on what you learn as well :-) So no, you are not a pest - you are now
a member of the community! So, welcome to Ubuntu ...
