"Ubuntu startup"----- "Evolution mail warning sounds"-- " The loss of my printer Icon from the panel"

Hello Gals/Guys,

When starting Ubuntu 6.10 I get the normal Ubuntu picture and the Yellow
Line booting up and then the screen goes black and a little window
comes up saying: 'The greeter application appears to be be crashing.
Attempting to use a different one !" Then a Gnome window comes up and I
can
sign in. I can operate with this, but is this likely to get worse and
can this be fixed ?

With 'evolution' mail I have tried to get the sound working, but no
success and there is no 'beep' either. I have checked the settings and
ticked the 'mail warning' box and it shows also 'every 10 minutes' , but
it appears to be mute. I like the idea of the voice saying: 'You've got
email'. How can this be fixed, please ?

And finally the "printer icon" has disappeared. The printer still works
after using the 'file', the icon then temporarily appears on the panel,
but disappears when the print job is done. Is there a fix for this,
please ?

I know I am a newbie, but I like this system better than the idea of
fiddling with MS Vista, fussing about which program from XP it will
accept, besides it is too expensive. Anyway, I thank you for your
expertise, in advance

greetings
