okay I fixed it. having a no brain day and didn't do any googling until *after* I e-mailed the list. Sorry! Solution and explanation here: http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=346157 .. turns out it was the UUID stuff in my fstab inserted by the edgy upgrade - UUID goes funny if problems with hibernation.
