Microphone Problem

Hello again,
I have been using Dapper Drake for some time and all seem to work okay
for my Compaq Presario 700 laptop, apart from one which prevents me
using Skype.
I use Verbatim Multimedia Stereo Headset for Skype and for listening,
all fine, fantastic stereo sound, however for talking, it really gives
me a trouble, my voice cannot be heard. I suspect my voice cannot go
through the mic for some reasons.
I also tried to configure Ekiga and test my audio setting, it gives an
error as follows:
Impossible to open the selected audio device (VIA 82C686A/B rev50) for
playing. Please check your audio set up, the permissions and that the
device is not busy.
I opened terminal and typed aplay -l to check the soundcard (with the
headset connected), sometime it gave me this result:
**** List of PLAYBACK Hardware Devices ****
card 0: rev50 [VIA 82C686A/B rev50], device 0: VIA 82C686A/B rev50
[VIA 82C686A/B rev50]
Subdevices: 0/1
Subdevice #0: subdevice #0
However, other time is gave me this:
**** List of PLAYBACK Hardware Devices ****
card 0: rev50 [VIA 82C686A/B rev50], device 0: VIA 82C686A/B rev50
[VIA 82C686A/B rev50]
Subdevices: 1/1
Subdevice #0: subdevice #0
I noticed the Subdevice sometime 1/1 and 0/1. Does this mean anything at all?
Anyone has any suggestion how to sort this out? Thanks heaps for responding.
Cheers,
Min
