2cents on support:
It appears as though seasoned linux users prefer mailing lists, and the concensus is that new users are more comfortable with forums.
In terms of support, if we wanted kickarse support for new Australian Ubuntu users, the best course of action appears to be a forum/ticket system where calls for help are posted via a pretty interface, then forwarded to the list, where the gurus feel more at home.
A reply could be then posted to the ticket system, possibly directly from the email client.
This is assuming that there is reasonable demand for support, I don't recall a lot of n00b questions making their way onto the list (maybe that's due to the list format?).
This describes a forum/ticket system dedicated to support however, I personally don't see the need to have a forum _and_ a list for general chatter, unless the two are intimately integrated so that the two interoperate transparently (work++), and everyone has their preferred interface.
Lots of 'int*' words there, sorry.
