Hi Dennis,
Welcome.. the CD has a couple of unique features and has been designed
to install and co-exist with other operating systems
on the hard-drive of your system.
1. If you pop the CD-ROM/DVD into the running MS Windows system you
should be able to install some Free and Open Source Software straight
away.. so you can get some benefit from your purchase, even if you
don't decide to go further. There should actually be more information
on the CD as well.
2. You should be able to boot from the CD and use it as a
Live CD, allowing you to use you system with Ubuntu. It won't touch
your hard drive (so nothing will get messed up) but it will run
slower. It's also a good way to checkout that all you hardware
works properly with Ubuntu.
3. The live CD has a graphical installer.. if yuo double click on the
icon, then you can install the system, once you think you want to give it a go.
On a related note, you might like to grab a copy of the 64 bit version
of Ubuntu 6.06 LTS. Depending on where you are, a copy may be
relatively easy to organise for you.
For 'realtime' help and discussion.. if you have a network attached,
once you boot in the LiveCD, start the 'xchat' application and come
and visit us in the '#ubuntu-au' channel on IRC.
More information and details, including guides can be found at
ubuntu.com (including the wiki).
Cheers,
Paul
