It really sounds as though you just have the user name and/or the 
password wrong, even though you are absolutely certain you don't 
(happens to the best of us).  Just boot into single user mode, create a 
root user and password then reboot and log in with that. Then you can 
see who the user is, because that will be in the /home directory, and 
then use that name with the passwd command to issue a new password to 
that user. Reboot and log in as usual.
