We've made a concisious decision to only use gloss where things would
really be glossy. So, to use them here would mean that we would make a
stylistic exception. I'm not so sure we want to do this. I like Thorsten
to keep me/us in check here. Thorsten?

As they are, I think they work quite well. I feel you 2nd guess yourself
quite alot. :) Let these sit for a bit and lets tackle something else
more pressing. The mail icons for instance and their inconstant
(stylistically) shadows.
