Wow, when I read the mailing list (I only read it, I have not  
participated this far) I really have the impression that the people  
here know way to less about theming (If you exclude Kenneth Wimer and  
Cimi).
All points Cimi made about the mockup are totally valid. It's just not  
possible and the ideas this mockup presents are imo not even good.
Also the constant pixmap-engine bashing is bogus. It's only a little  
bit slower, you don't even notice that on a system that is up to date.  
I mean even compiz (superduper-eyecandy) is enabled by default, so  
there is no need to worry so much about performance (the pixmap images  
can be optimized).
If you want to create a theme that looks new and you don't want to  
write a new engine, you need to use the pixmap engine.

And please don't forget: It's about theming, not reinventing the  
entire GNOME-desktop.
