There's a solution to #1. For some reason, after hardy, the way opacity
is handled in metacity was changed. This is easily fixed by enabling
"metacity_theme_shade_opacity" in gconf's /apps/gwd. Setting opacity to
1 in inactive shades would work as well.

#2, as you said would require some work. Either a patching how window
management works, or maybe using a stylish semi-separator (similar to
the one in KDE4's Oxygen) in the metacity. If I remember correctly, OS X
also uses unified menu/titlebar, how do they manage the movement of
windows?
