Good day,
This email entails the minutes for the meeting the art team has just had
on Saturday June 17, 16:00 UTC, in #ubuntu-meeting. Whether you attended
or not it would be nifty if it could be reviewed nonetheless so that I
can get feedback whether I've missed something crucial or have made
mistakes.
Attendance:
msikma is Michiel Sikma
klepas is Pascal Klein
sabdfl is Mark Shuttleworth
andreasn is Andreas Nilsson
The meeting has allowed us to make some important decisions regarding
how we will use the technologies available to use as well as the
leadership issues. We have:
# LEADERSHIP
An overall art team leadership with chairman, that would have 3-5 people
on it, responsible for"
- recognising contributions and thus
- membership of "formal art team" [members] and membersip in Ubuntu,
settling overal art team disputes, (which could still be referred up to
the CC)
- reporting to the CC on activity, membership changes, etc.
- oversee the default theme (Human)
Regarding positions there would be an "artist in chief", the 'AIC':
- this position would alternatve per each release
NOTE: Mark Shuttleworth has stated that the artist in chief will not
selected not elected. He has proposed a 'resume/portfolio' approach to
allow interested applicants to put themselves forward along with their
visions. Mark will announce on the mailing list what the position
entails and otherwise describe the tasks and responsibilities.
There would also be a few positions for art leaders, which is
essentially one tier below the AIC. These will be the chief people
working on the various themes (Tangerine, Outdoors, Tango, etc.).
We have agreed that the chief people working on these themes will put
themselves forward between now and the next meeting over the mailing
list so that they can be identified.
NOTE: Please, if you are the chief person working on one of the themes
(Outdoors, Tangerine, Tango), please email the mailing list with an
adequate subject line stating so.
# THE WIKI
We have agreed that the wiki needs to be fixed up if we are to use it
productively. Brian Burger (Madpilot), Étienne Bersac (bersace) and
Pascal Klein (klepas) will be restructuring the Art pages on the wiki.
We will:
- simplify the content, cutting down on the number of pages
- keep the wiki up and include meeting minutes
NOTE: We would like to request that no one makes large changes or
additions to the wiki art wiki pages during this time such that we can
figure out what we have, what we need and then begin to restructure the
content. Finally, we request that once the wiki is restructured that no
one makes large changes that affect the team without first discussing it
with the rest of the team. Thank you.
We have agree to set a timeline for this. We are aiming at three weeks
tops and will make an announcement via the mailing list when the
restructuring is complete. Cheers.
# AUC
Although art.ubuntu.com has a variety of issues in regard to handling
and usage in regards to the technology (the CMS) we have prioritised and
agreed that art.ubuntu.com is not the most important problem at this
point in time. We want to fix the wiki first identify leadership and so
forth first.
Therefore there has been a notice put on art.ubuntu.com (thanks Luka
Čehovin - lukacu):
> The Ubuntu Art Team has decided to focus on the restructuring of the
> wiki, Launchpad and it's organisation. This site, art.ubuntu.com is
> chiefly for artwork from the community that does not go into mainstream
> (on the CD) or into the universe repository. Thus, at this state fixing
> up the problems on art.ubuntu.com is not as important as fixing the
> wiki for example.
>
> We apologise for the inconvenience and emplore you to still post any artwork
> you may wish to share on the following community websites:
>
> * art.gnome.org
> * gnome-look.org
> * kde-look.org
> * xfce-look.org

> The Ubuntu Art Team
Drom (sorry, unsure of the real name) in #ubuntu-artwork has kindly asked for
us to note that art.gnome.org does not accept distribution specific artwork.
Thus we need to note that in the announcement. I will make sure a change is made.
# LAUNCHPAD
We generally agree that Launchpad is great for package and bug management, specs
and general organisation for the team. We will make use of it.
Those who have admin rights, and hopefully that will include the art leaders as
they will be in charge of probably packaging their themed packages will be shown/
can read up how to use Launchpad to for example track bugs filed against their
packages and so forth.
# MAILING LIST
We have agreed that the Mailing List (ML) should be used as our primary method of
general communication, through announcements and simple, small messages with, if
possible references to the wiki. We do not want too much traffic over the list as
we currently do as it is difficult to follow.
Adding to this: any important announcements should be listed in the subject, as is
the case with this email. :)
# IRC
We have agreed that #ubuntu-artwork is for helping each other out, collaboration
between people working on similar/the same thing and general chatting.
#ubuntu-meeting is for our meetings. Please do not make important decisions that
affect the entire team in IRC unless of course it is in a meeting. We encourage a
call for a meeting once a month though this might be specific to just one part of
the team working on something like a specific theme.
For example, one month all those working on Tangerine could meet and discuss
progress, or one month all those working on Human could meet to discuss the progress
of work that will go into mainstream.
However, note that all major decisions that effect the entire team which are best
handled via vote will be done so through Launchpad.
# GOALS
Our primary goal is, although extremely simple and quite obvious, something we have
not managed to do: get our artwork, created collaboratively into mainstream!
We can achieve this if we examine the existing artwork and their styles,
locate areas that are lacking in consistent artwork, or artwork in
general, prioritise and then collaboratively work to create some rocking
artwork for Edgy and beyond!
# ENDNOTE
Just to make sure everyone understands, the above in summmary means:
* no major changes/additions to the wiki unless by madpilot, klepas or
bersace.
* please not too much traffic over the mailing list
* an email from Mark is pending concerning the artist in chief
* please, if you are the chief person working on one of the themed
packages, mail the mailing list informing others of it so that it can
also be added to the wiki
* please lay off creating and displaying too much work via the mailing
list at this point in time. We want to prioritise and identify what
really needs to be done; no point wasting time and effort. Time will
come for it.
* feel free to chat and show off work in #ubuntu-artwork :)
* have fun!
That is it; thank you very much.
Sincerely,
Pascal Klein
