agreed. perhaps this discussion should include more people (i.e. lead
developers) as there are more issues involved here than one.
for example, i highly doubt a project like Tango, which while aiming at
standards and usability, will also go for the aesthetic limitations of the
web palette. also i'm not sure it's a good idea to make sure the default
theme works well for 8-bit depths at the cost of giving other users a
considerably less attractive and less "modern" looking interface. perhaps
there is some way to set the default theme at installation based on the
color depth that is autodetected? in other words, i think a fork (a set of
themes for 16bit+ and another set for 8bit) that gets set automatically
depending on your hardware might work here.
this is all based on the assumption that it's not easy to create
antialiased, modern, "eye candy" etc. looking graphics that also downgrade
to an 8-bit palette well. please let me know if i'm wrong.
