Keep in mind that art.ubuntu.com is simply a place for artists to
showcase their artwork. It doesn't necessarily have anything to do
with art development that makes it into a release (although there's a
good chance that we may pick some artwork off the site to become
"official").

I think that those people making major changes to the website's code
should also subscribe go gnome's art-web mailing list. I'd really like
to see the two sites stay as compatible with each other as possible.

If this is for general artwork that people are doing for themselves
and not for release, I don't really see the point. It's easy to set up
a free website somewhere and we can have a page on the wiki that
points to the various artists work.
If this is for artwork destined to become official artwork for a
release, I still don't see the need for a forum or bulletin board.
Each artist could maintain their own artwork page on the wiki, or we
could have wiki pages for each subject (backgrounds, splash, icons,
themes).
I think adding yet another portal will just make things confusing for
everyone. As it stands, artists can submit their artwork to the wiki,
to art.ubuntu.com, to ubuntuforums.org, to gnome-look.org, to
art.gnome.org, to the mailing list... you get the idea. It seems like
it would be much more productive to have people working on as few
outlets as necessary instead of scattering them across a half-dozen
different "official" art websites.

My favorite argument for sticking with art-web is the whole
integration with the gnome-art app. I've already started tweaking it
to use ubuntu's website instead of gnome's. If we can get that app
working well, it will be dead simple for end users to experiment all
they want without having to visit any websites and
preview/download/install different graphics. It's much like Stardock's
WinCustomize browser for Windows, which is extremely popular.
