[ubuntu-ar] jre en swiftfox en amd64

hace tiempo que intento instalar el java runtime enviroment (jre) en
swiftfox/firefox en varias versiones de ubuntu y nunca anduvo.

para instalarlo voy a 
http://www.java.com/en/download/linux_manual.jsp?locale=en&host=www.java.com:80 
y bajo el "Linux x64", sigo las instrucciones de 
http://www.java.com/en/download/help/5000011400.xml ("install the Linux 
  self-extracting x64 file") poniendo "jre-6u3-linux-amd64" en lugar del 
  que pone el tutorial, reinicio el swiftfox "Linux i686 (x86_64)" me 
vuelve a pedir los plugins de java. hay algo que estoy haciendo mal?

también probé desde el firefox "Linux x86_64" que me da la opción de 
instalar el "GCJ Web Browser Plugin (using IcedTea)" pero falla y da el 
siguiente error:
W: GPG error: http://download.tuxfamily.org gutsy Release: The following
