Ed,

I have been using the Barnes and Noble nook for over a year.  I just
plug it in, it shows up, and then I "cp" my books over
to  "/media/nook/my\ documents". 

I have used mostly "epub" books for the nook.  It does not understand
the kindle format.  It also does not natively display Chinese books.

I have nothing but good things to say about it.
