I've been using and upgrading Ubuntu since 5.04. The Ubuntu upgrade
process is not trustworthy, full stop. This has been discussed at
length on Sounder. Anything other than upgrading the bare basic
install to the version after is "not supported."

I was surprised when 10.04 to 10.10 worked. I shouldn't have to be surprised.

Debian gets this right, Ubuntu somehow managed not to.

There are all sorts of excuses for why this is. But having excuses
doesn't mean the upgrade process is not unreliable rubbish, because it
is.
