Must be your pet problem.
Sounds like a BIOS that swaps the order of the hard disks. Am I correct in
assuming that you have more than one hard disk? Should be fixable if you
fiddle a bit with device.map. Or use UUID's, they work just as good as the
(hd0,0) notation.
But srsly. You haven't broken a system until you have tried Gentoo. All
your 'buntu problems are pale in comparison.
