As has been pointed out elsewhere in this thread, the metapackages are
easily removed unintentionally, and restoring them is a feature.  This is
the most efficient way to ensure that appropriate packages are installed for
a properly functioning desktop in the new release, and as you say, you can
easily remove packages later which you don't want.

Recommends support will alleviate your difficulty when it is implemented.
