I can think of a good reason not to do that. In many parts of the
world, dialup is the only available internet access method. On a
notebook this can often require compiling the driver from linmodems.
Using another machine to get the sources is OK, but without gcc on CD
that means downloading gcc as well, and that can get very expensive
