Most other software you see pop up in other unofficial repositories. The
way to install non-packaged software is to package it yourself, IMHO.
Sometimes its even easier then just compiling (if its available in
debian for example, and if you know the right commands).
This way you can use it on all your systems and optionally make it
available for others, or suggest it to the MOTU.
