Oh nifty, it is used, you just have to get it to aptitude in the right 
form since its quoted.

Changing it to something like this seems to work better:

(~t^ubuntu-dekstop$|~t^ubuntu-standard$)\!(~n^update-manager$|~n^update-notifier$)

etc, will work.
