I don't think it's the age... I am only 28, and I too only consider
mailing lists over any web based interface, simply for technical
reasons.
I have found only one advantage to the web forums: you can post as a
guest, that's practical when you have infrequent questions.
But until Linux "just works", I do feel the need to be permanently and
conveniently connected to the community, and I have found e-mails to be
zillions times more efficient and pleasing to use than web forums.
That is.... until SABDL decided to post in HTML ! ;o)
