Didn't think it was *that* impressive. Xplanet's been around for years.
And then xearth for years before it (initial release was in 1993). It can
also provide cyclone, earthquake and volcano information and track the ISS
and other satellites.

Well some (me included actually) would say there's no downside. But as far
as usability and such goes:
* no mouse-click menus since in GNOME these are done by Nautilus not the
window manager.
* Desktop files not as easily accessible.
I'm really not a fan of the whole GNOME-taking-over-the-X-root-window thing,
but I understand the reasons behind it and grateful for it being optionally
disabled:
(in gconf)
/desktop/gnome/background/draw_background
and
/apps/nautilus/preferences/show_desktop
both need to be disabled.
