I agree with Matt ideas.
Also, I would consider implementing a more 'agressive' marketing like:
"Cool, you have made contributions to ''official docs'', you have earned
a ... (t-shirt, mugs, whatever)"
We could even have 'levels' of contribution, or use karma points.

/me would still like to see his karma point increased considering IRC
and wiki stuff but that is another topic as well as 'free-as-in-freedom'
of LaunchPad :D

This way people would also tend to participate in official instances or
look ways to do it instead of duplicating efforts or make efforts
outside the 'teams' sphere.
