Virtual private servers. Cost effective?

Personally I don't think they are worth it. Although you get to play
around with root access, generally you can do most anything with normal
web hosting with shell accounts; and these tend to be a lot cheaper,
without compromising on specifications, in my limited experience. I
considered getting a virtual server myself, but in the end plumped for a
normal hosting account and haven't regretted it at all: you can install
most software you want yourself as a local user.
Although the one you have pointed out is extremely cheap, definitely
research carefully the technology used (Xen has a reputation for being
most power-effective), and the support reputation of the company.
