After this recent issue I had a thought that it would be nice to have a
rollback helper that follows any modifications to packages that may
prevent a user getting to Gnome or equivalent.

ie something like "You have updated core components. If for some reason
your system does not restart cleanly please enter 'rollback' to assist."

Along similar lines.

That xserver-xorg-core bug really tripped up a friend of mine. He is not
an advanced Linux user, but knows how to operate the basics,.. but
ending up at that CLI stumped him greatly. Following this bug I imagined
groups of novice users departing our Linux family because of it.
