Speaking as someone who has read a lot of resumes/CVs over the years, I
think including your volunteer work on Ubuntu or any free/open source
project is worthwhile, even if you are going for a non-IT job. It shows
passion and dedication, indicates an ability to work collaboratively,
and many skills are transferable from an IT world to non-IT positions.
My only caution would be that if the readers of the CV/resume will be
non-technical, then keep that in mind - i.e., don't list the packages
you maintain or version numbers of releases you have worked on or things
like that. Describe your contributions - e.g., write software for xxx
project; contribute artwork; produce and edit documentation in a
distributed, collaborative team, etc.
Good luck!
Cheers,
Jane
