A lot has been said on the subject of Oracle and Ubuntu, but as someone
who has had to spend a little too much time working with Oracle and
Novell, I can confidently say there are reasons being overlooked here.
Were Oracle to acquire Ubuntu it gains new technology... open source
technology that Im quite sure they are capable of downloading on their
own. No, the point here is not the technology. This is just a
temporary deal, you need to be able to sustain it. Obviously there are
developers here, but they are not what Oracle need. Allow me to
sidetrack to an example at my place of work.
Here we run nearly 400 different servers for a large range of tasks,
each group of servers has a different set of caretakers so to speak.
Occasionally Oracle will release a patch, it is for that week that
finding the Oracle people becomes exceedingly easy. They are the guys
putting in 80 hour weeks and praying the patch doesn't break anything.
The Novell geeks on the other hand never experience such a pain. Novell
patches are just foolproof, they never break anything.
So it stands to reason that Oracle has a lot to gain from acquiring
Novell, especially in the patching department. Novell has just what
Oracle needs, Linux AND the developers who handle Novells oh so
streamlined patching scheme. I just hope they don't get Novells
marketing team... they suck.
