Ubuntu Live and installer CD image creation

Hi,

I'm posting this here because I'm not sure which list is most
appropriate and it seems this list is where people are asked to take
miscellaneous discussions.

I've googled for this, but I can't find an answer other than unpack a CD
and modify what's there.

I want to create an installer CD or Live CD based on the ubuntu ones,
but I want to be able to maintain it properly in parallel to the stock
ubuntu.

What packages and scripts do CD image maintainers use to define and
compile official CD images?

Where can I find the input to those utilities so I can maintain patches
on top of that and just run the same utilities to create my images?
