I think the emphasis on different names for different flavours of the
distribution is also intended to casually attack the meme that
derivative distros are "forks" and are therefore "bad".

Unlike many other distros, Ubuntu encourages derivatives, and Launchpad
should make it very easy to keep the derivatives up to date even when
they have a significant amount of divergence. Arguably, it's not quite
there yet, but the pieces are starting to fall in place and this vision
is likely to be realised within the next year.

Maybe Kubuntu is a fork after all. A fork with only little divergence.
What should be the problem with that? One reason why forks are frowned
upon is that development tools historically made it difficult to merge
back between parallel branches. Distributed version control systems are
removing this technical hurdle for "upstream" software projects.
Launchpad aims at removing the same hurdle for system distributions.
