The exported gettext (po) format: linefeeds in msgid

For dapper drake's ooo-help-smath (OpenOffice) document I got an export po 
file which KBabel insists on repairing.

My KBabel considers the following syntax wrong (backslash plus linefeed):
| #: helpcontent2/source/text/smath/01/03091100.xhp#par_id3150263.29.help.text
| msgid "\\\\lceil, \\
| ceil"
| msgstr ""

Should this be:
| msgid "\\\\lceil, \n"
| "ceil"
or
| msgid "\\\\lceil, \\nceil"
or even
| msgid "\\\\lceil, \\\nceil"
?

Another minor detail of the export is, that it might split escaped sequences 
like \" (backslash plus quote).
(Simply ensuring that to the left of the line splitting position does not 
remain a backslash, would suffice. And when the line consists of only 
backslashes, split on an even position.)
