Free as in beer..  Haven't followed the history of GNU, GNOME, eh? :-)

Many projects have been created to replace tools which were not open 
source, but were free to use.   A cross-platform widget toolkit is not 
trivial to develop, but people refused to use Qt, even though it was 
freely available (along with source code!).
