I feel this is something we should discuss in a smaller forum. The way
this was dealt with could have been much better. To me it looks right
now like misunderstandings and 'quick comments' added up to each other
and left you in this situation. Let me know who we need in this
discussion and I'm happy to mediate. I'm sure we'll find a way to sort
it out.

Conflicts would be used for cases exactly like this one. Package A and
B both ship /usr/bin/frobnicate. Scott James Remnant explained this in
his very own words talking about xscreensaver and gnome-screensaver:
