Yes, in case it didn't sound like it: I am definitely planning on doing a lot 
of sponsoring :)

I really just worked with Riddell and ScottK, which worked out pretty well 
(also most non-minor changes regarding KDE end up to be some kind of team 
discussion to find the most appropriate solution anyway).

I don't think so.
But I'll just imagine...
I'd try getting advice from people who do regular work on the affected 
package(s) to ensure I don't break anything.
For example: I didn't work on the xdg-utils package yet, so if I had to get a 
big change/fix done I would get the opinion of specialists before uploading 
anything.

I am very well aware of the impact changes to main packages can have on a lot 
of different people, hence I do my very best to keep/make everyone happy.
