in my opinion improving the experience is not about differences between
Debian and Ubuntu. I am reluctant about using Debian unstable/testing
early in the release cycle.

Most bugs one could find while using the distribution are upstream
bugs. Ubuntu is a nice playground for this as it always features the
newest and niftiest Gnome around. Sometimes I get my input from others
who criticise how certain things work on a Linux desktop and I often
jump on the bandwagon and fix those problems.[0]

 packages only in Ubuntu:	2067
 packages updated in Ubuntu:	1934[1]

(Source: Utnubu[2])

Many packages are added only to Ubuntu because users get their hands
dirty and package new stuff, mainly because the barrier is lower and the
MOTUs are more present to lend a helping hand than in the Debian world.

Debian MOTUs could sponsor new packages into Debian as well as
encouraging people to actively care about `that other distribution'.
Ubuntu moves more quickly indeed, but in the long term I see things
rotting in universe after the initial upload (and possibly some to fix
up broken things). Exposing them to a bigger userbase and collecting
more bug reports may be helpful, thus feeding back into Debian would
also benefit universe.

But for this a pool of DDs should rot together and actively backfeed
packages. Utnubu tried this, but with modest success. Perhaps
acquiring more MOTU DDs (i.e. people who are active in both, perhaps
more in Ubuntu) could help here.

Kind regards,
Philipp Kern

[0] This affects Ubuntu (which most of my not so much technical friends
use) as well as Debian Etch (with which a client pool at university
    I administrate works with).
[1] This also covers simple packaging changes and is no indicator about
how many packages have a new upstream version in Ubuntu compared to
    Debian.
