It's a good point, although I must admit, I no longer have any such
computers. The Mac mini I'm typing on (via a 26-year-old classic Apple
Extended II keyboard) doesn't have an optical drive at all, and I
don't miss it.

Some other Ubuntu meta-distros (albeit not official ones) come without
preinstalled productivity apps: for instance, Bodhi Linux:

That approach would work: a core OS with desktop and a web browser,
enough to get online and install everything else.

On the other hand, there's a fork of Lubuntu for older PCs -- LXLE:

http://www.lxle.net/

Perhaps it's time to leave the legacy kit to them?
