Serious Problem Encountered

Please help!

An exclamation mark suddenly appeared on my taskbar next to the network
indicator, and on clicking it I received the following:

'An error occurred, please run Package Manager from the right-click menu or
apt-get in a terminal to see what is wrong.
The error message was: 'Error: Opening the cache (E: encountered a section
with no Package: header, E: Problem with
Mergelist / var/lib/apt/lists... installed packages have unmet
dependencies.'

Synaptic won't open, stating a similar error.

Any idea how to recover the system?
