How do you know if it is safe to remove a usb

I forgot to mention, that before doing this, I need to click on 
(left-click, to display) a local disk folder (such as the home directory).

If the file browser is displaying a folder in the drive to be un-mounted 
(ejected), the entire PCManFM window goes away, and you don't know if 
things got un-mounted or not, in which case you need to fire-up the 
file-browser again to find out.
