crunchbang too, does not run on ppc (although i think it might be
possible to get there by first installing debian wheezy and then adding
the crunchbang repositories (but i'm not sure).

What i would do is this:

A) Debian Jessie (but downgrading the kernel to 3.2-04 until the dead
sound problem in the newer kernels is not solved) with LXDE and the
substitute openbox as windowmanager by jwm.

B) Lubuntu 14.04 (also downgrade the kernel) and also substiting openbox
by jwm.

In both cases i've a working system with, among others, pcmanfm-desktop
daemon, polipo, tor&vidalia, 2 conky processes (one for the weather
forecast and one for systeminfos) xscreensaver, keepassx, blueman and
autostart thunderbird to tray with around 200mb after finishing the boot
procedure.

In both cases i removed nearly all gnome related packages i found, which
will delete also network manager and (gnome) bluetooth. As network tool
i use ceni, which is commandline but well guided and easy to use - AND
EXTREMELY STABLE.

Cheers.
