Hi,
for the record 'lubuntu-desktop' is a meta-package that pulls in all the
dependencies.  AFAIK you can remove it safely.  I have removed it on
multiple machines to no ill effect.
But if you want to test removing ibus, simply remove it, and test it,
and reinstall lubuntu-dekstop again.
