speaking of network manager i have to second that the disappearing
applet caused me much grief and wasted 2 hours of my time at the
airport a week ago...
the applet was gone and i couldnt figure out what the name of the
command was to invoke it manually
it wasnt in the lubuntu menu either
finally i had to reboot from the CD /luckily i had it on me/ and see
the name of the applet /nm-applet/
i think that network access is critical - for everything else the user
can google the problem and hopefully find a solution
if the network however is down things can get very ugly and users will
simply turn away from lubuntu and try something else
just my 2 cents...
