This is a very complicated question. Sorry if it gets a bit off-topic
for this list.

For a project like Lubuntu, folks aren't paid for their work on
Lubuntu[0]. From support to packaging to testing we're volunteers who
do this for a variety of reasons - passion, interest, education,
experience. It's an inspiring place to participate :)

When you take a step back, the broader Linux world is a very different
place. The world's fastest supercomputers and Fortune 10 companies all
use Linux. Paid engineers from big names like Google, Intel and IBM
and rank in the top 20 contributors to the Linux kernel. All of these
organizations have an interest in helping to develop Linux for clear
business purposes, whether it's making sure their hardware works well
with the latest Linux distribution (hugely important in the server
market) or to simply making Linux run more effectively for their
business purpose, from selling books to trading stocks.

[0] This is not to say these people aren't paid elsewhere, I volunteer
with Ubuntu-related projects and non-profits but as a day job I work
for HP on the open source OpenStack project. And while I do
Ubuntu-related work because I enjoy it and am passionate about it, my
work with Ubuntu has been key to success in my career.
