Thunderbird makes inaccurate notifications

I'm noticing that Thunderbird's notifications don't always reflect the
last message to arrive.  These are the pop up messages in the desktop
environment that show in the upper right hand corner of the screen.
Sometimes they show a summary from a message that has previously arrived
and already been read, a few times it even pulls data from Sent
messages.  For the most part it works correctly and shows the most
recently arrived, unread message.  But quite often it shows the wrong
message.  I can't get it to do that on purpose though.  Have others been
using Thunderbird and seen this?
