Lubuntu 12.04 installation problem on Acer Aspire

I eventually sorted this out, I had to add nomodeset to the grub
options.   There are other solutions (basically a newer kernel) but for
the moment this is the easiest solution for me.

What surprises me is how difficult it was to find the solution, are
there really so few people running any Ubuntu 12.04 version on these
machines?
